According to the international labour organization (I.L.O) Sir Lanka has one million people with disabilities. Some of them have their disabilities since birth. Others acquired their disabilities later in life due to various reasons. Among them considerable amount is represented by disabled children. As defined in Sri Lanka a person of disability is “any person who as a result of deficiency in physical or mental capacity who is not able to ensure for himself or herself the necessities of daily life”

There are over thousands of mentally as well as physically disabled children. There is no proper program for these children and they are kept at their homes without education and skilled training etc. which are pre-requisite to conduct a normal life

Considering these factors a group of parents in Kegalle district have formed an organization called “Surakuma Foundation” (Reg. No ke/Di/Le1/6/10/11) These disabled children's parents foundation has 40 members presently, covering Kegalle district.

This foundation has opened a center for these disabled children to be educated and taken care of, Presently 23 children are being trained at this center.
